Major Finder Quiz Feature
Whether you’re applying to University as a fresh High School Graduate or looking to transition from a Community College to a Four-year program, choosing your major can be quite challenging. Without going into the details of the many daunting conversations about your future and how your college major can impact it, having a tool with some questions can only help guide you through the thought process.
While I remember having an idea of what I wanted to do in college before I graduated High School, I had a ton of classmates who were much less sure. The average student at my High School planned to attend university directly. However, I knew some classmates who had a backup plan to attend Community College first instead, if they were rejected from the Universities they applied to. I even had that as a backup plan, even though I fully intended to attend University upon graduating High School. However, I didn’t always plan on going down the Computer Science route. When I was in my first year of High School, I didn’t have an idea yet. We had a seminar class that we had to take each year. The Freshman year seminar had a session where we took a long 100+-question survey to help identify career paths we could pursue. It’s been a while, and I don’t remember the specific questions asked, but I remember they were broad, yet focused on various pathways. After the survey, we were given the top 3 career pathways with some majors we could focus on.
There are certainly a number of services that already help users identify possible major pathways. While I wasn’t planning on focusing on that for the College Companion, after some conversations with others, I understood it would be valuable to offer it still. Since the primary target of the College Companion is to help individuals throughout their entire journey, from pre-College to College life to even planning what to do after college, it would be valuable to provide a tool to start that journey.
Thus, the Major Finder Quiz Feature was created! While it isn’t definitive nor does it give what major you have to go down, it gives some direction for those who may have no idea at all. To avoid being too tedious, our Quiz has only 16 questions. From those 16 questions, 64 possible majors are picked. These questions focus on three primary aspects: Values, Interests, and Aptitude. From these three aspects, three majors are narrowed down and presented to the user.
Whether you have no idea what field you’d like to major in or you’d like some possible additional pathways, the Major Finder Quiz can help! Once again, it is not intended to provide which majors you have to have. It simply provides options based on a few questions. The user doesn’t have to be logged in to use it. If they are, it will save it to their account, allowing them to reference the results in the future. If the purpose is simply to view some options, the user can remain logged out and still use the feature.
